The power of design to help change the course of a school’s future. Cajon Valley Middle School (CVMS), an aging inner city school, was redeveloped in four phases over eight years — with an inspiring design that reversed a decline in student enrollment.
Now, CVMS students thrive in modern learning environments featured in a vibrant, open campus. The creative plan is completely re-oriented and features energy efficient multi-level buildings around a central campus Quad; resulting in a strong sense of place and enhanced student security.
A surprising benefit? A marked increase in community pride and ownership. The joint-use gymnasium and athletic fields, shared by the campus and the city, have been embraced by the neighborhood. It’s not only revitalized key resources for both students and residents — it’s sparking new interest in nearby redevelopment projects within the community.
